Packing efficiently was more or less as difficult as a backpacking trip. Even with side bags, there is limited space on a motorcycle, which demands more prioritization than packing the van for my whole family. Though, I did not have any actual backpacking planned this time, so I packed as much as I could on my motorcycle without worrying about weight. I ended up only bringing slightly more than my usual backpacking gear because I had a flight the next day, so I only planned on staying overnight and did not need much gear. Besides restocking on fuel for my stove and fuel for my belly, the only new gear I ended up buying was ROK straps from Cycle Gear to strap my backpack down, which worked very well and provided me peace of mind over rope ties.

💡

Shoutout to my boss who told me about how one of his rope ties came loose and got caught in his rear axle. He recommended straps from Green Chile Adventure Gear, but it was too late to have them delivered.

With my 2019 BMW F750GS fully loaded, I jumped on and began my journey to Tahoe National Forest. The 2-hour drive was equal part city freeways, country highways, and windy back roads. For the most part, it was uneventful, which is what you are hoping for in motorcycle trips away from home. However, even the short ride reminded me of my desire to replace the OEM seat with something more comfortable like the Corbin motorcycle seat, who are local to California, or the Sargent motorcycle seat, who have a low version for the vertically challenged. Unfortunately, the price of American-made, high quality motorcycle seats make it difficult to prioritize them over more practical improvements such as a top case or crash bars.

Speaking of crash bars, I did have a bit of a tumble on my way to camp. The friend group I was meeting up with was running a couple of hours behind, so I took a rode through a couple off-road trails on my way. I prepared in advance for this option by running directions from two different GPS: one traditional directions from my phone and another from my Garmin GPS that included off-road paths. There was a point in the off-road path where I had to go up a steep incline on a sharp turn that was effectively a U-turn. Coming up to the turn, it looked intimidating, but I was already locked into my tunnel vision. I dropped a gear, thinking I could power through it as if I was riding on a dirt bike, but I was not that surprised when I tipped over and slid halfway down the hill. Immediately, I tried to lift my bike back up, but lifting 500lbs up a hill is already hard enough and my body was shaking just standing from the adrenaline, so I gave up.

💡

Did you know the differences between National Parks and National Forests? Before you plan your next trip, visit the National Park Service website to read about them.

I took off my gear, sat down on the side of the path checking for any injuries I might have not noticed, and shamefully watched my bike lay on its side. After calming down, I walked over to my bike and squat it up to its side which was difficult but easier with a calm mind. I did a quick damage report hoping I would not be stranded off-road in the middle of a forest. This F750GS was my introduction to adventure bikes so I was pleasantly surprised that there was very little damage. Damage included a broken, but usable rear brake lever, a broken turn signal cover, but still working, and some minor scratch on the handlebars and side case. The minor cosmetic damage was barely noticeable after I rubbed it out. I replaced the brake handle lever and turn signal cover for less than $100 and also bought some Barkbuster handguards to better protect my brake levers. In this trip, my side cases saved scratching my engine, but I might not have them on next time, so I moved Touratech Upper and Lower crash bars higher on my upgrade priority list. For the rest of the ride to camp, I stuck to the main roads. Unfortunately, I did not think to take a picture of hill of shame.

Upon reaching Shirttail Creek Campground, I found myself immersed in what felt like a resort. The camp sits right next to a reservoir that is the perfect temperature for swimming. There are multiple campsites strategically placed around the reservoir and each campsite has a limited amount of sites, so it never feels crowded. The bathrooms are clean, not flushable, which is better than the usual hole I have to dig and cover up. When you walk up to the water, as long as you ignore the dog poop people never clean up, the experience feels intimate and exclusive. Before setting up my site and before the rest of my group arrived, I swam out to the island in the middle of the reservoir to enjoy a relaxing moment drying off in the sun before the forecasted clouds rolled in later during the day. Rain or shine, this area is beautiful.

I timed my return to camp perfectly. My friends had just driven in as I was walking back. Unlike many other places, the sites at this campsite are very spacious, so every site ends up being amazing and secluded. We could easily fit 3 to 4 cars and several tents on a single site. The rest of the trip went as expected: eat, swim, eat, card games, more eating, campfire, stay up too late, wake up too early, etc. Unfortunately, I had a flight to get to soon after waking up, so I packed my gear, secured it to my bike, and headed home. Riding back in the rain was daunting in the back roads, so I took it easy, but eventually made it home safely.

Every adventure brings its fair share of challenges, and my motorcycle camping trip was no exception.
Nestled in the heart of the California countryside, Pinnacles Campground provided the ideal campground for our camping trip. Driving into Pinnacles National Park around 4pm, we never felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. The campground is close to the highway and the nearest city, Hollister. The campground even has a little bit of cellular service and Wi-Fi near the campsite store. We only had a couple of hours of daylight left, so we quickly pitched our new Kelty Discovery Basecamp 6-person Tent that I bought last second because I could not find the poles for my Coleman 4-person tent and REI was having their massive Memorial Day weekend sale. Then, we went for a short 1-mile hike on a nearby trail called the Bench Trail. While the small portion of the trail we hiked did not contain any unique landmarks or breathtaking views, we were fortunate enough to see a group of California Condors, one of the largest, rarest birds in the world, soaring over the mountains alongside our path.

<div As the kids settled into their tents, the adults regrouped with drinks around the campfire for some cherished downtime. The absence of city lights, and more importantly, the absence of children, allowed us to fully appreciate the beauty of peace and quiet. We shared tales of our own graduations, offering advice, encouragement, and lessons learned. It was a time for reflection and celebration.

We were in bed by 11pm, and up by 6am. After packing up the campsite, we bid farewell to Pinnacles Campground and began our next adventure to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Located along California's central coast, this renowned institution offered a fascinating glimpse into the marine world. From playful sea otters to majestic sharks, the aquarium housed a diverse array of marine life. Our eagerness led us to arrive at 9am, an hour earlier than the opening of the aquarium, so we decided to spend an hour exploring Cannery Row, the historic street that the aquarium sits at the end of. Once bustling with sardine canneries in the early 20th century, Cannery Row has since transformed into a vibrant hub of eclectic shops, restaurants, and coastal delights.

Photo by Mick Haupt / Unsplash

The Monterey Bay Aquarium provided an immersive experience, allowing us to witness the beauty and fragility of underwater ecosystems. The aquarium boasts a remarkable variety of exhibits that showcase diverse marine habitats and the incredible creatures that call them home. We saw exhibits like the Kelp Forest, where towering kelp swayed with the rhythm of the waves, creating a haven for a multitude of fish, otters, and other marine life. We marveled at the bustling activity of the Open Sea exhibit, where mesmerizing schools of fish swam alongside majestic sharks and graceful sea turtles. Each exhibit offered a window into a unique ecosystem, leaving us in awe of the complexity and beauty of marine life. One of the highlights of our visit was the opportunity to witness sardines, darting tuna and agile hammerhead sharks chow down during the daily feeding in the million-gallon Open Sea exhibit.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is not just a place for entertainment; it is also a hub for education and conservation. In the beginning of this year, I set out on a goal to go on 12 camping trips in 2023. That is one trip a month if you are good at math. Originally, six of those were supposed to be backpacking trips, but I gave up on that quickly as I realized the difficulties of trying to backpack with two kids. It was not until a month ago did I think of the idea to create a blog about my outdoor adventures. As I sit down to write my first blog post, I can't help but feel a surge of excitement and anticipation. This post marks the beginning of my journey as an outdoor enthusiast and blogger, where I'll share my adventures, tips, and insights about hiking, camping, and embracing the wonders of nature. Join me as I reflect on this significant milestone and outline my goals and aspirations for this blog.

My love of the great outdoors started when I was young, adventuring outside the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles. With its sprawling metropolis and endless entertainment options, Los Angeles provided a vibrant backdrop to my upbringing. The city's energy fueled my dreams and aspirations of working with technology, but as I grew older, I yearned for a deeper connection with the natural world—a respite from the constant hustle and bustle–time, out of the office. Waking up to the sound of chirping birds and the thrill of a challenging hike in comparison to the never-ending grinding of construction and the anticipation of slow pace traffic, ignited a passion within me. The outdoors offered a vast array of possible adventures, from camping in remote wilderness to conquering majestic peaks.

I want to explore specific aspects in my blog of how to go on your own adventure through various mediums such as backpacking recommendations, gear reviews, and ongoing photographs of the trail. I aim to inspire and inform fellow adventurers by sharing happy-path hiking guides and personal stories of memorable camping experiences.

This first blog post marks the beginning of an incredible journey where I blend my passion for the outdoors with the art of storytelling. Through this blog, I aspire to inspire others to embrace outdoor activities, embark on unforgettable adventures, and cultivate a deep appreciation for the natural world. Together, let's explore breathtaking trails, discover hidden camping gems, and forge lasting connections with fellow adventurers. Get ready for an exciting ride as we uncover the wonders of the great outdoors, one blog post at a time!
